Black Powder War: review

Black Powder War by Naomi Novik. Fantasy. 2006. 365 pages.

The third installment of the Temeraire series continues to recount the revised history of the Napoleonic Wars (with dragons). Although I'm starting to feel that perhaps Novik is dragging things out because she got an extended book deal, the slow pace is balanced for me by the charming dragon Temeraire and his dashing captain Laurence. We learn more about dragons as well as dragon eggs, feral dragons, and the mysteries of the far East (as seen by the British). The plight of dragons as slaves who deserve equal rights is also further explored. Although I'm not biting my nails waiting for the next installment, I do think this series has some of the most original writing about dragons that I've read in ages.
