probably the last of my summer reading

I don't think I'll be finishing anything in the next 2 days, so this is it. I fell far short of my goal (which was 20 books).

Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer. YA fiction. 2007. 629 pages.

Eclipse is the third installment in the popular Twilight trilogy. I had hoped that this was going to be the completion of the series, but it looks like there is another book planned. I wasn't hooked immediately by this one, and I found myself getting frustrated with the characters-even more so than with the last book. This book's action focuses on some grisly slayings that have been happening in Seattle. The authorities think serial killer, but the vampires know better. In the more important emotional aspect of the series Bella has to choose between the love she feels for vampire Edward and her friendship with werewolf Jacob, something I found so tiresome I could barely read it. I can not stand the Jacob character. I find the "mystical Indian" aspect of the books almost insulting with their stereotypical "magical dark-skinned person" cliche. The one thing I did love about this book was that we learned the histories of some of the other vampires. They all have very interesting origin stories.
I'm not sure if my quarrel is with the editor or publisher or author, but I feel like everything is being dragged out. It seems like the author's desires for her characters are possibly at odds with the editor. This was certainly a more grown up book than the past two, with Bella's graduation from high school and her desire to become a vampire at center stage. I hope the next book gives us some resolution.
